Save the Date: October 3rd Symposium Aims to Revitalize Holocaust Research in Poland

posted in: News, Uncategorized | 2

The COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have distracted the scholarly world from discussion of many important subjects, including the Holocaust. To revitalize academic interest in Holocaust studies in Poland, three world-renowned Holocaust scholars are scheduled to headline a Zoom symposium on October 3rd from the Anne Tannebaum Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Toronto.

The morning session, from 9:00 am to 13:00 pm will cover issues crucial to understanding contemporary Polish debates surrounding the Holocaust, in both public and academic realms.

Professor Jan T. Gross from Princeton University will discuss the repercussions of his path-breaking book Neighbors: The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne.

Professor Jan Grabowski from the University of Ottawa will focus on the activities of the current Polish government against scholars whose work does not align with its official “historical policy.”

Professor Joanna Tokarska-Bakir from the Polish Academy of Sciences will report on her research into the anti-Jewish pogroms in Poland at the end of and after the Second World War.

The keynote panel session, starting at 16:00 will enable the audience to participate in discussions with the presenters. Both sessions will be live streamed on Zoom via this link.
