After years of working together remotely, Avi Posen, the Senior Director of Unpacked for Educators, was finally able to join CHES in person for three teaching sessions in October and November. Welcomed enthusiastically, Posen presented the first session of a pilot project initiated by Open Door Media to educators from Sir Robert Borden High School, Ashbury College, and Holy Trinity High School.
The pilot is an unprecedented project for public schools in North America and is intended to teach about current antisemitism and how to respond to incidents of hate. It could not have come at a more opportune time given that we are facing an unparalleled rise in antisemitism. Avi’s presentation skills are remarkable as is his ability to combine historical facts and discuss controversial subjects in a nuanced and engaging way that is nothing less than outstanding.
His presentation covered an array of themes and included a timeline of antisemitism as well as practical tools. The teachers in attendance were absorbed and felt an immediate connection with Avi.
Following the first part of Avi’s presentation, educators were divided into groups of five to discuss “case study” scenarios based upon incidents that have happened at their schools. At the end of the session, each group reported its solutions and concerns. View the full presentation.
Avi will continue to engage with teachers on an ongoing basis throughout the year and as they need him. The next round of workshops is scheduled for January.
Authors’ Note: The situation in Ottawa schools continues to be alarming as we face uncertainty and unprecedented antisemitism. CHES continues to work hard to combat this evil in our midst.
