Further to inviting teacher candidates at the University of Ottawa’s Department of Education for CHES’s November Teachers’ Workshop, Tracy Crowe, Program Specialist-Teacher Education, spoke with CHES about the lack of resources about antisemitism for future educators. She was interested in the opportunity to work with CHES and wanted to provide more of our in-person or virtual workshops for her students.
On January 31st, in honour of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Faculty of Education hosted a learning session for their student teachers. Professor Tibor Egervari, Emeritus professor with the university’s Faculty of Arts and a Holocaust survivor from Hungary, who is a member of CHES Speakers’ Bureau, gave a poignant lecture to 150 students and two staff. Professor Egervari shared his memories of surviving the Holocaust in hiding. His presentation included a historical overview detailing how antisemitism in the Holocaust was deliberately planned and executed. He stressed the importance of addressing current antisemitism and a better engaged citizenry.
Excellent questions were asked by the students about how to deal with antisemitism in their future classrooms.
