January 27, 2025. Attendance is by invitation only.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day event hosted by the Italian Embassy in Ottawa in partnership with CHES.
Speaking on the legacy and lessons of the Holocaust are Mr. Italo Camerino and Ms.
Julia Camerino. Their father, Enzo Camerino, was a survivor of Auschwitz. He and his family were deported from Rome on October 16, 1943. Of the 1,259 people picked up that day and taken to Auschwitz, only 12 returned to Rome; among them were their father, Enzo, and their uncle, Luciano.
On January 27, 1945, the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp – where more than one million Jews were sent to gas chambers and to their agonizing deaths during the Holocaust – was liberated by Allied troops. In 2005, The United Nations General Assembly designated January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day
(IHRD).
