Deborah Silver grew up in southern New Jersey, in a family very involved with the Jewish community and Holocaust Education. Deborah’s grandmother was a survivor of both the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and Auschwitz. Throughout her life, Deborah recalls her mother speaking about her Bubbie’s experiences and educating teachers on how to teach the Holocaust. Her parents also planned the community’s Yom Hashoa program every year, in which she and her siblings often took part.
Since moving to Canada in 1998, Deborah has lived in Toronto and Calgary before recently moving with her family to Ottawa. She had been a volunteer with Calgary Jewish Federation’s Holocaust Education Department, assisting with the “Here to Tell: Faces of Holocaust Survivors” exhibit and book. As a 3rd generation survivor, Holocaust Education and remembrance are extremely important to Deborah, who is happy to now be volunteering with CHES in Ottawa.
