Listen to Dr. Wendy Lower’s interview with Ottawa Morning, on CBC Radio.
Program Overview
The Centre for Holocaust Education and Scholarship (CHES) is the premier hub for Holocaust education in Ottawa with programs that focus on community engagement, remembrance, and outreach to schools.
CHES is proud to host the opening event for Holocaust Education Month, 2022. The launch coincides with the annual commemoration of Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, which saw the violent turning point in state-sponsored attacks on the Jews of Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia.
This special evening will feature the distinguished award-winning Holocaust historian, Dr. Wendy Lower, a widely published American author. Dr. Lower will discuss her new book, The Ravine: A Family, A Photograph, A Holocaust Massacre Revealed (2021), which received the National Jewish Book Award in the Holocaust category and was shortlisted for the Wingate Prize and longlisted for a PEN.
By investigating a single photograph taken in Miropol, Ukraine, in 1941, Dr. Lower’s research unveils the networks of complicity that made the Holocaust possible. Dr. Lower’s presentation will shed a light on her work in The Ravine, highlighting the importance of sharing these stories. Her exceptional research reveals details that would otherwise not have been available to us.
Ottawa’s Holocaust Education Month opening event typically draws an audience of hundreds, often with standing room only, and includes government representatives and diplomats. Please join us on November 10th for what promises to be an enlightening and riveting experience.
