Saul Rubinek’s presentation will focus on how delving into and re-telling the story of his parents’ survival during the Holocaust in Poland affected three generations of his family. He has recently completed his play, “All in the Telling”, highlighting the many strands of this story and he will perform excerpts from it.
Biography
Saul Rubinek was born in Föhrenwald Displaced Persons Camp outside of Munich, Germany, the son of Frania and Israel Rubinek, Holocaust survivors from Poland. His father was a Yiddish theater actor in Poland before the war. After the war, in the DP camp, Israel formed a Yiddish repertory company where he was both a director and actor.
Saul’s parents were hidden for over two years during the Nazi occupation of Poland by the Bania family, (Zofia, Ludwig and their son Maniek) Polish farmers recognized as Righteous Among the Nations at Yad Vashem. The Rubinek family moved to Canada in 1949 and ultimately settled in Ottawa in 1956.
The family’s journey to freedom was documented in a book written by Saul, and in the 1987 documentary film produced by him about his parents’ reunion with the famers who saved their lives – both titled “So Many Miracles”. Saul’s professional acting career started when he was 7 years old at the Ottawa Little Theatre and spans more than 50 years and hundreds of roles on stage, radio, film and television. Saul is also a filmmaker and playwright. His new play, “All In The Telling” is about the circumstances that led to his writing the book and producing the documentary film about his parents, and how those events affected three generations of his family. He hopes to premiere the play in Ottawa at the NAC, and then tour it world-wide.
